This is the Newsletter of the ECMI NGO Network for the Improvement of the Interethnic Relations in the Republic of Macedonia . This Network is a result of a joint initiative between the European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) , in Flensburg , Germany and members of this Network.
This Network will enhance the co-operation of the member NGOs towards the development and improvement of interethnic tolerance, respect for differences and dialogue among all those living in the Republic of Macedonia .
In particular, this NGO Network aims to strengthen the capacities of the participating NGOs to generate joint projects and other initiatives with a strong interethnic dimension and to implement such initiatives.

 
Network Aims


1. Promotion of mutual cooperation through exchange of all available resources.
2. Initiation and implementation of joint projects.
3. Increasing the influence of NGOs in the community.
4. Creation and development of a joint strategy for the improvement of interethnic relations.
5. Expansion of the network.

ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Kumanovo
“Youth and NGO’s”

The Women Association “Kolo na Srpskite Sestri” in partnership with the Interethnic NGO Network “MAJKA” and the Humanitarian Organization “El Hilal” concluded the implementation of the pilot initiative “Youth and NGO’s”.
The aim was to decrease the negative behavior of the young people from Kumanovo at the same time to develop a strong relationship between the youth and the NGOs. Two hundred youths with different ethnic background were engaged in the survey carried out with aim to identify the needs of the youth and to defining the concept of cooperation between the youth and the NGOs. Through the second phase of this initiative, six open forums were held at the secondary schools in Kumanovo in order to stimulate further cooperation with the NGOs.

Romani Women's Organization "DAJA" – Kumanovo
Theatre performance “Spring Game”
A theatre performance “Spring Game” was held as part of the Program for Education of Roms, implemented by the Romani Women's Organization "DAJA", member of the ECMI NGO Network. Twenty eight Macedonian and Romani children from the primary school “Krste Misirkovi” Kumanovo took part in this performance, which was dedicated to the clean environment and the approaching spring. The performance was held at the Kumanovo Theatre on 21st May, the Veles Sport hall on 29th May, and the Kochani Labour University on 02nd June.

ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Shtip
Meeting of the Coordinative Body
At the premises of the ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Shtip the Coordinative Body of the ECMI NGO Network met to discuss several issues in relation to further development of the Network. 
All suggestions from the Regional Centres for modifying the name of the Network were discussed; five were finally taken into consideration. Furthermore, the Coordinative Body discussed the organisation of the be-yearly General Assembly, as well as possibilities to further enhance the capacities of the Network members. The Coordinative Body members also supported the idea of joint action of the Network members to gather signatures in favour of corridor E-8 and as well as the idea of joint action against the announced telephone price increases.

ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Skopje
Joint Exhibition
An exhibition of children’s drawings was held at the Primary school “Dimitar Miladinov”, Skopje. This is a joint exhibition of two separate events: the exhibition for celebrating the International children’s day” held at the Primary school “Dimitar Miladinov”, organized by the Association of Polish people from Macedonia "POLONIJA" and the fore workshops on topic “The reflection of the environment in the children’s creations”, held at the primary school for children with special needs “Idnina” implemented by the Citizens Association "AN- BLOK".
Over 80 children were directly involved in setting up this joint exhibition with aim to raise the awareness about the consequences of the pollution and need to protect the environment.

ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Shtip
Celebration of the second anniversary
The two years anniversary of the ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Shtip was marked with a presentation in the library “Goce Delchev” and a small cocktail in Hotel “Oaza”. The presentation commenced with an introduction of the ECMI NGO Network’s mission and continued with a presentation of the previous activities, future vision and plans of the Regional Centre Shtip. In the hall of the library posters and flyers of the Centre were exhibited and used for fundraising. Visitors were given the chance to vote by donating money to their favourite item.  The poster which was part of the initiative “Election Fear play” won the first price. All collected funds will be invested in toys that will be donated to the “Classic playground”, a playground for children that will be founded in the library. E-mail: ecmistip@ecmingonet.org.mk

ECMI Regional NGO Resource Centre Tetovo
Visit to the South East European University
As part of the initiative “Guiding final-year high school students to university” a group of final-year high school students visited the South East European University. The aim was to get acquainted with the University’s programme, academic climate and methodology. A representative of the University presented the university procedures in more details and described the admission requirements for each faculty.  
This pilot initiative is implemented by the NGO “Golden generation” in partnership with the NGO “Multikultura” and the Humanitarian Association of Roms in Macedonia "SONCE", all members of the ECMI NGO Network.

Youth Multicultural Initiatives
Festival “Solstic 2004” 
To mark 21 June, the first summer day as well as the longest day of the year, the Youth Multicultural Initiative, member of the ECMI NGO Network organized the four day music festival “Solstic 2004” in partnership with the French Alliance from Bitola.
The aim of the festival was using music as a medium to promote multiculturalism and to extinguish the negative socio–economic and cultural trends. Besides Macedonian artists, the festival programme included musicians from France and Bulgaria.

NGO Felix Group
Round Table “New model for cooperation between teachers, pupil and parents”
The round table on the issue “New model for cooperation between teachers, pupil and parents” which was held at Hotel “Epinal” is part of the one year initiative implemented by the NGO Felix Group, member of the ECMI NGO Network and supported by the Institute for Sustainable Communities, Skopje branch. The aim of organising this event is to contribute to the ongoing reforms in the educational system.  
The first phase of the initiative implementation, which included 8 teachers, 72 pupil and their parents took place at the primary school “Gorgi Sugarev” Bitola as a multiethnic school.
During the implementation teachers were trained about the children’s rights, conflict management and communication skills. The practical part of the initiative consists of visits by the teachers to the pupils’ homes, implementing the attained skills during their everyday work, enhancement of the consultation process on the meetings with the parents etc.
